Curacao Named The Conditions For Obtaining A Residence Permit For Investors

Curacao is an autonomous state that is part of the Netherlands. The island is located in the Caribbean Sea, close to Venezuela.

The government of Curacao has been granting investors a residence permit by an investment since 2014. The duration of the investor’s permit depends on the amount of investment:

  • from $280,000 — a residence permit for three years;

  • from $425,000 — residence permit for five years;

  • from $850,000 — indefinite residence permit.

Qualified investment options under the program:

  • purchase of real estate;

  • investment in the business;

  • Buying securities on the Dutch Caribbean Stock Exchange.

Buying securities is a change that was made to the program in 2021. The investment pool is also not limited to the proposed options. The government may supplement the investment options or grant a residence permit for investment in other projects.

Opportunities offered by the Residence permit of Curacao

If the program participant’s application is approved, he or she will receive the investor’s permission to live in the country.

The investor can live, conduct business on the island and educate his children. After 5 years, it is allowed to apply for Dutch citizenship. Residents of the island are considered citizens of the Netherlands, respectively the European Union. The concept of citizenship of Curacao — does not exist.

The government of Curacao notes that the residence permit is not automatically renewed, the investor will need to apply for a new permit. But over three or five years, there may be additions to the program, so the rules for the extension of status may change.

The investor can include family members in the application: spouse and children. For each family member, it is necessary to obtain health insurance.

6 EU countries allow investors to obtain a residence permit. The governments of the countries offer one or more investment options.

With a European residence permit, one can freely enter the European Union and Schengen countries. If all the conditions of the Residence Permit or Permanent Residence Permit programs are met, the investor can apply for citizenship of the country where he has been a resident for the past few years.

Caribbean citizenship — an alternative to residency in Curacao

Citizenship-by-investment programs are available in five Caribbean countries. State governments offer several investment options to choose from: a non-refundable contribution to a state fund, the purchase of the real estate, or bonds.

All five countries are members of the Commonwealth of Nations, so citizens of these Caribbean countries travel visa-free to more than 140 countries, including the Schengen states, Great Britain, and Singapore. And to enter the US, Caribbean citizens get a visa for 10 years under a simplified procedure.
